Secure Email for Digital Sovereignty
Email is one of the most personal and vulnerable forms of digital communication. To maintain your digital sovereignty, you must protect your email from surveillance, interception, and unauthorized access.
1. Choose an Email Provider That Respects Privacy
- ProtonMail: Based in Switzerland with strong encryption, zero-access architecture, and no logs policy.
- Tutanota: German-based encrypted email service with end-to-end encryption by default.
- Mailbox.org: German-based, GDPR-compliant, encrypted email with strong privacy policies.
- Self-hosting: For advanced users, self-hosting with PGP/GPG gives complete control.
2. Enable End-to-End Encryption
End-to-end encryption ensures that only you and the recipient can read your messages. Even the email provider cannot access the content.
Use PGP/GPG encryption for email:
gpg --encrypt --recipient [email protected] message.txt
3. Use Strong Authentication
- Two-Factor Authentication: Enable 2FA using an authenticator app or hardware key (never SMS).
- Strong Password: Use a unique, complex password for your email account.
- Recovery Options: Set up secure recovery methods that won’t compromise your account.
Even encrypted emails leak metadata (sender, recipient, timestamps, subject line). Be mindful:
- Use pseudonymous email addresses for different purposes.
- Avoid revealing sensitive information in subject lines.
- Consider using “Send Later” or scheduling tools to mask sending patterns.
